Lyme Regis Bowling Club, Lyme

There are seven rinks and the club dates from 1937.

Lyme Regis Bowling Club

History

Bowls has a long history on the south coast with the most famous (though probably mythical) game involving Francis Drake on Plymouth Hoe before the arrival of the Spanish Armada in 1588.

The Lawn Bowls played in the south of England is slightly different to the Crown Green Bowls of the north of the country. The bowls are the same (though not the “jack” – the smaller target bowl) but the green of the northern variety has a curved surface – higher in the middle than the sides. In Lawn Bowls, the bowlers bowl in straight lines, whereas in Crown Green Bowls the bowlers can bowl across the camber (“crown”) of the green.
