Arbury Hall

Arbury Hall, Nuneaton, Warwickshire

Arbury Hall is a beautiful Elizabethan house, built on the site of a 12th century Augustinian Priory.

History

It has been the home of the Newdigate family for over 400 years. The house was transformed by Sir Roger Newdigate (1719-1806) in the 18th century to become the finest example of Gothic Revival architecture in the country.

The house and gardens have literary connections with George Eliot

Arbury Hall is set within 100 acres of lakes and parkland with 20 acres of formal gardens. The house and gardens have literary connections with George Eliot, the author of such English classics as Middlemarch and Mill on the Floss.

Her father was employed as the agent of the estate and Mary Ann Evans (aka George Eliot) was born here in 1819. In her first novel, Scenes from Clerical Life, Arbury Hall becomes Cheverel Manor, and its benevolent and reforming owner, Sir Roger Newdigate, Sir Christopher Cheverel.
