Exeter Custom House, The Quay, Devon
Exeter Custom House on The Quay in Exeter, Devon dates from 1681, and is reputed to be the country’s oldest custom house in existence. The building was still used by HM Customs and Excise until 1989.
Architecture
The building is noted for its elaborate, ornamental lime-plaster ceiling by John Abbott of Frithelstock and its fine staircases.
Exeter Custom House is a Grade I listed building and one of the first buildings in Exeter to utilize brick in its architecture.
The building underwent complete refurbishment between 2006-2008 and again in 2015.
The Custom House Visitor Centre (Tel: 01392 271 611) is now housed in the Custom House. It has information on the area’s history. Inside are various exhibits and old maps of the city’s past as an important port from Roman times to the modern period.
There is also a small gift shop selling local pottery, maps and books.

From Exeter St David’s Station, The Quay is a 25-minute walk south. Exeter St Thomas Station is 10 minutes on foot. Alternatively, from central Exeter take a bus from Sidwell Street.
