The roses in our garden this year are just gorgeous. They smell fantastic too and last a long time if you keep dead-heading them. An enzyme builds up in the ‘hip’ (rose bud after pollination) and when the quantity of enzyme is high enough a signal is sent to the plant to stop producing flowers and to put all its energy into the seeds. So break off the dead rose heads as soon as the petals have fallen and you will continue to get glorious roses throughout the summer.
You don’t need to cut them off with pruning shears, simply bend the stem and they will break at the correct point which is at the nearest ‘node’.
