Richard Hooker (1553-1600)
The Anglican priest Richard Hooker (1553-1600) is one of Exeter’s most famous sons and one of England’s most respected theologians. Born in Heavitree, Hooker rose in the new Tudor Church of England to become the Subdean of Salisbury Cathedral and later Rector of St. Andrew’s Boscomb in Wiltshire.

Hooker’s writings, in particular Of the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity, stressed tolerance and inclusiveness and the middle way of Anglicanism between what he saw as the extremes of Catholicism and the Puritan movement.
