Powderham Castle, Devon
Powderham Castle, located in the Exe Estuary south of Exeter, is one of the south west’s finest castles, up there along with the so-called “last castle built in England,” Castle Drogo.

A Grade I Listed building, the castle is a fortified manor house
The impressive Powderham Castle has a much longer history than Castle Drogo and dates originally from 1391. Built by Sir Philip Courtenay, today it belongs to the 18th Earl of Devon so the house has been in the hands of the Courtenay family since the start.
History
Only one of the original six towers of the castle remains from the 14th century and the building has been much altered, damaged and restored over the ages. Powderham suffered substantial damage during the English Civil War (1642-1646) but was considerably restored and remodeled during the Georgian (1702-1837) and Victorian periods. The present gothic-style castle owes much to the work of the Victorian architect, Charles Fowler. The central entrance tower dates from 1710-1727.
Powderham Castle offers one-hour guided tours, a gallery, a gift shop, a tea room, and a deer park. The castle rooms may also be hired for wedding receptions and as a film location.
