Lonely Planet’s Guide to Devon & Cornwall

First off is Lonely Planet’s Devon & Cornwall the 4th edition of the book now running to over 200 pages.

The Rough Guide to Devon & Cornwall is now in its 6th edition and is mainly targeted at younger travelers. There is good information on public transport.

Some specialist titles include Devon – 40 Coast and Country Walks, East Devon & the Jurassic Coast, The Little Book of Devon, and Agatha Christie’s Devon.

Historical Devon is often associated with the deeds of Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh, two local heroes and two very controversial figures of Elizabethan England. Drake was a better pirate than he was a captain of a warship.

Raleigh’s life goes beyond the fables and clichés of potatoes, tobacco and spreading his cloak in the mud for Elizabeth I. He was ultimately to lose his head in the Old Palace Yard at the Palace of Westminster after being accused of involvement in a plot against James I.

A good biography of Drake is Sir Francis Drake: The Queen’s Pirate by Harry Kelsey.
