Barrington Court, Somerset, South West England
Barrington Court is a Tudor Manor House completed in the late 1530s. It was purchased by the National Trust in 1907, one of the first properties acquired by the organization.
The house was later leased to and restored by the Lyle family of Tate and Lyle sugar fame. They employed the landscape gardener Gertrude Jekyll to design the formal gardens.
History
The “Court House” was built in the 1500s by the Clifton’s – a family of wealthy London merchants, who bought the property from the Duke of Suffolk. The house is a magnificent Tudor-style mansion.
The house is constructed in the typical “E” shape of the times with two wings.
The property fell into disrepair during the 18th and 19th centuries after it was sold by the Strode family in 1745. Fortunately, the National Trust and the Lyle family have been able to restore the house to its former glories.
The Court House has now been emptied of furniture but features an impressive staircase and original wood panelling.

Adjacent to the Court House is the remarkable Strode House built by the Strode family in 1674, originally as stables and a coaching house.
The building was converted into a separate house in 1920. It now houses a restaurant and a shop for visitors.

Access – Getting There
Barrington Court (TA19 0NQ) is located only 8 miles from Montacute House on the B3168 road near Ilminster in Somerset.
The house and gardens are north of the A303 Exeter to London Road and southeast of Taunton.
