Cotswold Stone Walls

The characteristic golden or honey colour of the stone walls in the Cotswolds area comes from the local Oolitic limestone quarried throughout the region. Cotswold stone walls are one of the many pleasing architectural features of the area.

History

The stone dates from the Jurassic period and is extremely durable, being used both for walls and as roof slates.

The Romans first began to quarry the stone which has been used not just throughout the Cotswolds but further afield at Blenheim Palace, St Paul’s Cathedral in London, and various university colleges in Oxford.

Today Cotswold stone is still available for commercial building and one of the delights of the area are its many dry stone walls, which often date from around 200 years ago.
