History

Bristol Cathedral in central Bristol is built on the site of the Abbey of St. Augustine which was founded in 1140 AD.

The cathedral is a famous example of a “Hall Church” because the nave, aisles, and choir are all the same height.

The full name of Bristol Cathedral is the “Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity” which it became in 1542. As can be seen from the sign below, portions of the church were built at very different times.
