Sedan Chairs

The sedan chair is an English variant of the litter. The sedan chair consists of a chair or windowed cabin made for a single occupant. The sedan chair was carried by at least two porters in front and behind. The porters used wooden rails that passed through brackets on the sides of the chair. The sedan chair shown below is exhibited at the Assembly Rooms in Bath.

Another sedan chair exhibited at the Assembly Rooms in Bath (see below) was decorated in a style popular in Germany and Austria. This sedan chair dates to the late 18th century and was used to bring people to the Assembly Rooms for concerts and assemblies.
