STEAM Museum of the Great Western Railway, Swindon
STEAM Museum of the Great Western Railway is housed in a restored Grade II railway building near the centre of the former Swindon railway works. The museum celebrates the story of the men and women who built, operated and traveled on the Great Western Railway. STEAM opened to the public on 14 June 2000.

Visitors to STEAM Museum of the Great Western Railway can view reproductions of the factory floor where locomotives and railway cars were constructed or maintained (see below). Mannequins of the workers are used for dramatic effect and authenticity.

Visitors to STEAM can also view a selection of locomotives and railway cars (see below) including railway cars from Queen Victoria’s royal train.

Isambard Kingdom Brunel
The museum pays homage to Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859), the great Victorian engineer, who built the Great Western railway (see below), and also the SS Great Britain.
