Built nowadays with a plastic bucket and spade or by hand, sandcastles or sand sculptures have probably been made since the beginning of human history, though it seems that late 19th century Atlantic City really got things going. Nowadays, there is even an annual World Championship in Sand Sculpture in Harrison Hot Springs, British Columbia, Canada.
