King Athelstan’s Tomb is located in Malmesbury Abbey. The tomb itself is empty but Malmesbury Abbey is the place where he chose to be buried. King Athelstan was the favorite grandson of King Alfred the Great.
History
King Athelstan died in 939 AD. He never married and had no children. He was succeeded by his half-brother, Edmund. His four half-sisters all married European monarchs. Eadgyth married Otto 1, the Holy Roman Emperor, and Algiva became the bride of Charles III of France. Eadhild was to marry Hugh, Duke of the Franks.
During his reign the king was never defeated in battle, winning victories over the Welsh, Scots, and Danes. The Bible was translated into English from Latin during Athelstan’s period on the throne.
The empty tomb dates from the 15th century
