London Peace Pagoda, Battersea Park, London
The London Peace Pagoda in Battersea Park on the south bank of the River Thames was the inspiration of the Reverend Gyoro Nagase from Nagoya in Aichi Prefecture, Japan.
History
He was involved in the construction of the first Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist sect’s Peace Pagoda in Milton Keynes in the late 1970’s. Nipponzan Myohoji is an offshoot of Japanese Nichiren Buddhism.
Moving to London in the mid-1980’s, Nagase was instrumental in the construction of another pagoda in Battersea Park.

The 33.5 meter high Peace Pagoda can be viewed from Chelsea Embankment and also Albert Bridge. The pagoda is decorated with four gilded statues of the Buddha on its four sides. There are over 80 such peace pagodas all over the world including one in Vienna, Austria.
The pagoda is now a well-known spiritual centre in the capital.

Access – Getting There
Battersea Park is across the River Thames from Chelsea Embankment, Chelsea Physic Garden, Ranelagh Gardens and the National Army Museum. Battersea Park Station is at the south east corner of the park, one stop from Victoria. Battersea Power Station is also close by. The nearest tube station is probably Sloane Square on the north side of the river.
The 170 bus to Victoria Station stops outside Chelsea Physic Garden from where Battersea Park is a short walk over Albert Bridge for a scenic approach.
