Budleigh Salterton, Devon

Budleigh Salterton is a small seaside town at the mouth of the River Otter on the Devon coast, 15 miles south of Exeter on the east side of the Exe Estuary.

Jurassic Coast

Budleigh Salterton is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty within the Jurassic Coast World Heritage site, which stretches along the coast from Orcombe Point in East Devon to Old Harry Rocks in East Dorset, and is a favourite route for walkers and ramblers. Many bird-watchers also visit the town to see the herons and egrets who feed in the Otter estuary. Buzzards and Peregrine falcons can also be seen on the cliffs.

Beach huts

The town has a population of just over 4,000 people but has some lively pubs, cafes and restaurants serving both locals and the many visitors, who come mainly in the summer months.

Fairlynch Museum has displays on the local history and geology of the area and is housed in a traditional thatched house.

Pleasant beach huts stand under the bluff on the beach.

Stone wall

Sir Walter Raleigh, the great Elizabethan adventurer, was born near Budleigh Salterton.

Access – Getting There

From Exeter the A376 runs down to Exmouth and then follow the B3178 to Budleigh Salterton. Budleigh is not well-served with public transport: the Coasthopper 157 bus runs between Sidmouth and Exmouth through Budleigh. The 357 bus goes to Exmouth and there is one 57C bus to and from Exeter.
