The Glasgow Subway in Glasgow, Scotland, opened in 1896, making it the third-oldest subway in the world after the London Underground and the Budapest Metro in Hungary. The subway is often referred to as “the Clockwork Orange” due to its circular route and distinctive orange livery. It serves the city’s inner neighborhoods, particularly the West End and South Side.

Originally a cable-hauled system, the subway transitioned to electric power in 1935 and underwent a major modernization in the late 1970s, which included upgrades to stations (St Enoch and Partick stations were completely rebuilt), tunnels, and rolling stock.

Lines

The subway in the city is a 10.5 km circuit of 15 stations taking 24 minutes to complete. The circuit runs north and south of the River Clyde in Scotland’s largest city.

There are two lines: an Outer Circle running clockwise and an Inner Circle running anti-clockwise.

Hours

The subway runs from 6.30 am to 11.45 pm Monday to Saturday and 10 am to 6.12 pm on Sunday.

Stations

The 15 stations on the Glasgow network are Bridge Street, Buchanan Street (the busiest station on the network), Cessnock, Cowcaddens, Govan, Hillhead, Ibrox, Kelvinhall (for the Kelvingrove Museum), Kelvinbridge, Kinning Park, Partick, Shields Road, St. Enoch, St. George’s Cross and West Street. There are connections with the rail network at Buchanan Street (to Queen’s Street via a travelator), Partick, and St. Enoch (a short walk to Central Station).

Some of the stations now have free WiFi.

A single ticket to anywhere on the network is presently £1.80 with the Smartcard fare £1.60.
