Although it is Newmarket in Suffolk that is considered to be the home of horseracing in Britain, beautiful Yorkshire can also be considered to be a hub for the sport of kings. With nine racecourses dotted around the county, and with a plethora of top trainers and horses, ‘God’s Own County’ is a must for all racing enthusiasts.

Top Trainers

As mentioned, Newmarket is the home of racing in Britain, and as such, the majority of top racehorse trainers are assembled there, particularly when it comes to the Flat racing world. Yorkshire, however, also has a collection of trainers that can be considered to be among the best.

Below are just a few top trainers that call Yorkshire home.

John Quinn

Training in Malton on the outskirts of the city of York, John Quinn is one of the shrewdest trainers in the racing world. Four-time Group 1 winner, Highfield Princess is the flagbearer for Quinn’s yard, but he has also improved the likes of the Raceshare syndicate-owned Red Mirage horse racing performances, as well as another Group 1 performer, Liberty Beach, and the consistent, Mr Wagyu.

David O’Meara

Another trainer plying his trade on the outskirts of York, David O’Meara has become a top flat racing trainer in a short space of time. Having only taken out his training licence in 2010 after a career as a jump jockey, O’Meara has enjoyed a lot of success with horses that have been sent to him from different trainers. Move In Time and Mondialiste are among the best horses to have been under the Irishman’s care.

Karl Burke

Not far from the Yorkshire Dales another Group 1 winning trainer resides. Karl Burke has enjoyed an incredible few years with his horses around the world, and he continues to make foreign raids in search of more top-level success. Multiple-time Group 1 winner, Laurens, the top-class, Libertarian, and French Group 2 winner, Al Qareem are amongst the best horses to represent Burke on the track.

The Racecourses

With nine racecourses, Yorkshire is the county with the most tracks in Britain. York, Wetherby, and Doncaster are the most famous of the nine, but Beverley, Redcar, Catterick, Pontefract, Thirsk, and Ripon also have some big days throughout the year.

York

Recently named the best horse race in the world, York’s Group 1 Juddmonte International, won by the likes of Frankel and Sea The Stars, is one of the most important races on the calendar. The Ebor Festival is another important meeting at the track, whilst it also hosted the ‘Royal Ascot’ meeting in 2005 when Ascot itself was being renovated.

Wetherby

Known for some top-class jump racing, Wetherby plays host to the prestigious Charlie Hall Chase every October/November. The Grade 2 three-mile chase is known as an early trial for the Cheltenham Gold Cup and has been won by the likes of See More Business and Cue Card in the past. The 2023 winner, Gentlemansgame is now set to tackle the Cheltenham Festival showpiece in March.

Doncaster

One of the oldest racecourses in Britain, Doncaster has the distinction of hosting the final Classic race of the flat season. After Newmarket’s 2000 Guineas and the Epsom Derby, Doncaster hosts the St Leger in September every year.
