Probably the most photographed horses in history stand outside Horse Guards on Whitehall, just to the north of Downing Street and not far from the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, and Westminster Abbey.

The entrance on Whitehall, just south of Trafalgar Square leads to Horse Guards Parade, once the HQ of the British Army and the site of the annual Trooping the Colour. The ceremony commemorates the monarch’s official birthday. It takes place usually on the second Saturday in June. Beating Retreat, another military parade is also performed here.

The Palladian style entrance to Horse Guards is protected by mounted troopers of the Household Cavalry in full regalia of breastplate and plumed helmet.

The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment has its barracks at Hyde Park. The regiment is the Queen’s official bodyguard and has a history dating back to 1660.
