The M5 motorway is Devon and Cornwall’s main road link to the rest of the UK to the east.

Route

The M5 runs from Junction 8 of the M6 at Great Barr in the Midlands near West Bromwich and Walsall to Junction 31 at Exeter in Devon.

Other major junctions are 6 for Worcester, the 11 for Cheltenham, the 11A for Gloucester, the 13 for Stroud, junctions 16 to 18 for various parts of Bristol, 19 for Portishead, 20 for Clevedon, 21 for Weston-super-Mare, 23 for Bridgwater, junction 25 for Taunton, 27 for Tiverton, junction 29 for Exeter Airport as well as Heavitree in Exeter and junction 30 for Sidmouth, Seaton, and Lyme Regis.

The motorway connects the Midlands and the southwest of England

History

Construction of the first stages of the motorway was completed in 1963 and the route to Exeter was completed in 1977. The M5 now connects with the M6, M42, M4, M49, and M50 motorways.

The motorway follows the route, by and large of the A38.

The M5 can be particularly busy during the summer tourist season, Friday evenings, and at weekends. Count on delays at these times.
