Exeter 1596
This beautiful building in Exeter, Mol’s Coffee House, Devon, originally dates from 1596, as is proudly displayed on the wall.
The place was supposedly a rendezvous for the Elizabethan buccaneers, Francis Drake and Walter Raleigh. Though recent research shows that this is all invented.
In fact the building in Cathedral Close was built to house ‘Annuellars’, or priests. Annuellars fulfilled the final wishes of benefactors to Exeter Cathedral, carrying out the deceased’s requested duties, offering comfort to their relatives, and maintaining a lit candle in their memory.
