Devon Long Houses Architecture

Devon Long House Architecture

Devon long houses can be found throughout the county and especially in the Dartmoor area. Often dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries, these long narrow dwellings are often thatched. As well some of them can be rented out as holiday cottages or have been converted to Bed and Breakfast guest houses.

History

The original long houses are thought to date back to Saxon times. They often have attached narrow gardens running down to a river, stream, or another water source. The above house even has space for a grass tennis court.

The houses in earlier times often had animals as well as humans living under one roof, usually cattle or sheep.

This fine example is a privately-owned home, east of Exeter near the village of Woodbury Salterton, not far from Honiton and Exeter Airport.
