Species of Mushrooms in Britain
Mushrooms grow well in Britain’s climate and there are thousands of different species of mushrooms in the UK. Some unusual ones are Stinkhorn, Phallus impudicus and the bright red Fly agaric, Amanita muscaria, a distinctive toadstool.
Many types of mushrooms in the UK are edible and many are poisonous. Poisonous varieties include the Fool’s Conecap (Conocybe filaris) and the deadly Death Cap (Amanita phalloides) for which there is no known antidote. The Roman Emperor Claudius is thought to have died after being poisoned with Death Cap mushrooms.
Magic Mushrooms in Britain
The most common type of magic mushroom found in the UK in early-late autumn is the Psilocybe semilanceata or the liberty cap noted for the “nipple” at the top of the head.
These mushrooms, photographed at Cadbury Castle, grow on grassy meadows where cows and sheep have grazed and appear between September and November.
Never eat wild mushrooms unless you are 100% sure what they are.
