Austen (1775-1817) was born in Steventon in Hampshire. As an adult, she also lived in Bath and Southampton. She moved to Winchester to seek treatment for the disease which was to kill her.
She is most famous for her six major novels, considered classics of English literature. At least one of these books will be read by nearly every schoolchild in England. These are Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), Emma (1815), Northanger Abbey (1818, posthumous) and Persuasion (1818 posthumous).
