Old Sarum, Salisbury

The history of human habitation at Old Sarum dates from neolithic times (around 3000 BC). A hill fort was erected by local inhabitants on Old Sarum around 500 BC, and the Romans occupied the site from 43 AD to 410 AD.

Later, the area was controlled by the Anglo Saxons and became one of the most important towns in the West Kingdom. Today, the site is managed by English Heritage.

Norman Castle

Visitors to Old Sarum today can see the remains of a Norman castle (see image below) built around the year 1069 AD, just after William’s conquest of England and Wales.

Visitors to the site can also see the remains of a cathedral and bishop’s palace (see photograph below) constructed between 1075 AD and 1092 AD. Stone from these buildings was used in the construction of Salisbury Cathedral.

Access – Getting There

Old Sarum is located just off the A345 on a hill about 2 miles north of modern Salisbury. It is located near both Salisbury Cathedral and Mompesson House.
