Lower Slaughter is connected with its sister village, Upper Slaughter, by the River Eye which runs through both hamlets. The word ‘Slaughter’ comes from the old English word slohtre meaning marshy place.

Attractions

The village is best known for its limestone cottages. Visitors to this picturesque place can visit the Old Mill (see below) which features a small museum, shop and cafe. The Old Mill was built in the 19th century and was last operated as a mill in 1958.

Visitors can also see the lovely Parish Church of St Mary (see below). This church was built in 1867 in the ‘Early English’ and ‘Decorated’ styles. The present church replaced an earlier one built in the 13th century AD.

Access – Getting There

Lower Slaughter is located between the B4068 and the A429. It is just north of Bourton-on-the-Water. Visitors to the village may also want to visit Upper Slaughter, nearby Bourton-on-the-Water, or Burford.
