Malmesbury Abbey Interior
Malmesbury Abbey was founded in 676 AD and completed in 1180 AD. The abbey is a fine example of late and local Romanesque architecture.
When Malmesbury Abbey was built, stone vaulting was just being introduced. Malmesbury seems to have been designed to have a stone vault. One remarkable feature of the abbey is the plain stone facade which rises above the altar.

History
Founded in the mid-7th century, the Benedictine abbey became a noted seat of learning. The sources record that around 676 the scholar and poet Aldhelm, a nephew of King Ine of Wessex, chose the site and began building the church.
The church is dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Paul.
Dissolved in 1539 by King Henry VIII, the abbey survived as the parish church of Malmesbury.
The remaining treasures of the abbey include four illuminated Flemish bibles. The interior of the abbey church is simply awe-inspiring.
