Durham Cathedral, founded in AD 1093, is one of the oldest and most famous churches in England.

The Cathedral Church of Christ, Blessed Mary the Virgin and St Cuthbert of Durham
History
The original Cathedral was designed and also built under William of St. Carilef. He is now buried in the Cathedral, but since then major reconstructions and additions to the building have taken place.

The building of the UNESCO World Heritage Listed church began in 1093
Durham Cathedral sits almost at the very top of the city, above the River Wear, and the central tower stands at a height of 217 feet (66 metres).
The historic church has the remains of Saint Cuthbert from Lindisfarne, Saint Oswald’s head, and also the body of the Venerable Bede.
The Cathedral is still very much in use. Indeed, daily Church of England services are held there, which often incorporate performances from the Durham Cathedral Choir.

The Cathedral is by far Durham’s most popular tourist attraction, followed by Durham Castle. Indeed, it features in the Harry Potter films as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
In those films, there is a spire that has been digitally added onto one of the Cathedral’s famous towers.

Durham is 431 km north of London on the M1 and A1(M); it is 224 km south of Edinburgh in Scotland on the A1
