History

The Electric Ballroom started off as a small venue but expanded during the war when Camden Town tube station was bombed in 1941. The back of the building and the street next to it were completely destroyed, so the owner bought the entire area and turned it into a 2000-capacity venue.

In the 1970’s the ballroom was frequently used as a rehearsal space by names as big as Paul McCartney and Led Zeppelin. The Clash also took up residency in the venue for a week for album rehearsals during the 70’s.

It was not, however, until 1978 that the ballroom got it’s current name. It was first known as The Buffalo, then The Carousel, and then finally in ’78 it was relaunched as the Electric Ballroom.

Unfortunately, due to noise complaints, the newly-named Ballroom was forced to close 9 months after opening to undergo soundproofing. It reopened again in 1979.

The Electric Ballroom has remained open ever since and is still in constant use. It was a close call in 2003 when redevelopment for Camden Town tube station was proposed, which would have resulted in the end of the Ballroom.

However, a strong argument from thousands of music fans and musicians, including Blur’s Graham Coxon, the venue was saved. Unfortunately London Underground are currently working on a new proposal which may put the Ballroom in danger yet again, despite it being a vital part of Camden’s musical heritage.
