Ardvreck Castle, Sutherland, Scotland
Ardvreck Castle is a ruined fortress on a small promontory of land jutting out into Loch Assynt in Sutherland, Scotland.
Located under the brooding bulk of Quinag, Ardvreck Castle was the traditional seat of the MacLeods of Assynt.

History
Ardvreck Castle was built by Angus Mor III in the late 16th century. All that remains are a tower and a connected piece of wall. However, in its heyday, the castle was much larger as can be seen from the surviving foundations.
The promontory is sometimes cut off by high water, leaving Ardvreck on its very own small island.
Like all good British castles, Ardvreck Castle is supposedly haunted – by not one, but two ghosts. One of these apparitions is the Mermaid of Assynt, Eimhir.
Loch Assynt is 9.65 kilometres in length and has excellent fishing for salmon and trout. It discharges into the sea at Loch Inver, via the river Inver.

Access – Getting There
The castle is 11 miles east of the village of Lochniver and easily accessible from the North Coast 500 highway, which opened in 2015.
