Deansgate Station in Manchester is on both the Manchester to Preston and Manchester to Liverpool lines. The adjacent Deansgate-Castlefield Station, connected by a footbridge, is on the Manchester metrolink.

Knott Mill Station, the original Deansgate

History

The original Knott Mill & Deansgate Station on this site opened way back in 1849.

Trains from Deansgate run to Manchester Oxford Road, Manchester Piccadilly, and also Manchester Airport.

Trains also run south to Buxton, Stoke-on-Trent, and Macclesfield. Eastbound services are to Liverpool Lime Street, Southport Station, Preston, and Blackpool North.

Nearby is the Manchester Central Convention Complex, formerly the G-Mex, the reconstructed Mamucium Roman Fort, Spinningfields, and Beetham Tower – presently the second tallest building in the city.

Also within easy walking distance are the historic Castlefield Basin, the Science and Industry Museum (MOSI) on Liverpool Road, Castlefield Gallery, and the International Anthony Burgess Foundation (10 minutes on foot).

South of the station is the Deansgate Square development consisting of four high-rise apartment blocks. The South Tower at 201 meters (659 feet) is the tallest building in Manchester. It overtook the Beetham Tower in 2018.

The legendary music venue and nightclub the Hacienda once stood near the station. It is now a block of flats – Hacienda Apartments. The club, operated by Tony Wilson’s Factory Records, ran from 1982 to 1997. It was famous for its acid house and rave scene and its association with the band New Order. Nearby Factory International aka Aviva Studios plays homage to the name.
