Architecture

The approach to Monk Gate was once guarded by a barbican, but that was removed in 1825. The gateway still contains a portcullis and features a number of “murder holes” through which missiles could be dropped on potential attackers.

Modern Usage

Monk Bar contains a narrow stairway giving access to those visitors who wish to walk along York’s city walls. Monk Gate also contains the Richard III Experience visitor attraction.

Richard III Experience

Seemingly demonized for eternity by William Shakespeare, Richard III’s reputation has undergone something of a renaissance in recent years. This reappraisal followed the discovery of the king’s skeleton at the former Greyfriars Friary Church in Leicester and its reburial at Leicester Cathedral in 2015.

The last Plantagenet king of England, Richard ruled from 1483-1485 before he was deposed and killed by Henry Tudor, the Earl of Richmond, the future Henry VII, at the Battle of Bosworth.

The Richard III Experience includes suits of armour from the period, information about the War of the Roses, between the houses of York and Lancaster as well as multimedia and interactive exhibits.

A similar exhibition is the Henry VII Experience at Mickelgate Bar. Both are open every day from April to October: 10 am to 5 pm; November to March: 10 am to 4 pm. Closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day.
