History

The gardens were once a communal garden for a development of 10 blocks of 3-storey flats on Bethune Road. The flats were built by Matthew Allen in 1874. They were for the use of residents and had greenhouses and wash houses. The Bethune Lawn Tennis and Bowling Club was also based here until 1929. Later the space became accessible to the wider public and were a series of ‘garden rooms’ still evident today.
