History
Designed by the prolific Victorian architect Sir Arthur Blomfield (1829-1899) , the church was consecrated on October 11, 1884, following the establishment of the parish in September, 1883. Blomfield’s CV is huge, he also designed the Royal College of Music in London, St Saviour’s Church on Oxford Street and Magdalen College School, Oxford among a list of well over 50 other buildings in the UK. Interestingly, a young Thomas Hardy was once his assistant.
During World War II, a bomb damaged the south side of the church in 1944, destroying several stained glass windows. The east window was later replaced in 1951 by a design from Scottish stained glass artist William Wilson (1905-1972). Wilson’s stained glass work is in Canterbury Cathedral, the collection of the National Galleries of Scotland and several churches throughout Scotland including in Aberdeen, Dumfries and Iona.

Architecture
The church’s exterior, constructed from Kentish ragstone with Bath stone dressings, presents a modest appearance. However, the interior has extensive murals and stained glass windows, primarily crafted by the Victorian designers Heaton, Butler and Bayne.
These superb artworks depict scenes from the life of Jesus, from the Annunciation to the Ascension, as well as figures from both the Old and New Testaments. Altogether, the murals were created from 1886 to 1919. Alexander Higerty, painted all the murals except one, a work on the west wall, surrounding the main entrance to the church.

The building is Grade II listed
