Abraham Lincoln Statue Manchester

Originally located in Platt Fields Park, the bronze statue of Abraham Lincoln by George Grey Barnard was moved to Lincoln Square, Brazenose Street, Manchester in 1986.

The statue was presented to the city in 1919 to thank the citizens of Manchester for their support of Lincoln’s fight against slavery.

History

Originally the statue was meant to stand outside the Houses of Parliament in London to mark 100 years of peace between Britain and the USA, but Barnard’s depiction of Lincoln was perceived as controversial at the time so another more orthodox statue was commissioned for the capital.

Manchester lobbied to receive the original statue due to the sacrifices made by the city’s cotton workers in support of Lincoln’s stance against slavery. The statue was unveiled in Platt Fields Park in 1919 in a celebration of Manchester’s liberal values.
