The Beatles Statue near Albert Dock is a well-known landmark in the city. It is the work of the prolific British sculptor Andy Edwards. The 1.2 ton bronze sculpture was unveiled in 2015 by John Lennon’s sister, Julia Baird and the deputy mayor of Liverpool, Ann O’Byrne.

Characteristics

The work depicts the Fab Four (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr) walking along the River Mersey in a casual pose. An actual photo shoot in 1963 was the basis for the statues. The Cavern Club in the city, where The Beatles came to fame, donated the sculpture to the city of Liverpool.

The sculpture has several esoteric details such as the acorns in John Lennon’s right hand – a reference to his act of mailing acorns to world leaders in the 1960s as a symbolic gesture of peace. Additionally, attached to the sole of Ringo’s right shoe is a card bearing the postal code “L8,” referencing the area where The Beatles’ drummer grew up.

The Beatles made their last public performance in Liverpool at the Empire Theatre in 1965.

Other statues of musicians by Andy Edwards include the Bee Gees (2021) in Douglas, Isle of Man, Bob Marley (2021) also in Liverpool and a recent statue of Lemmy (2025), on Market Place, Burslem, Staffordshire. The statue of Billy Fury in Liverpool is by Tom Murphy. Edwards’ other passion is football and he has works of Sir Alex Ferguson outside Pittodrie in Aberdeen as well as Brian Clough and Peter Taylor at Pride Park Stadium in Derby.

Access – Getting There

The statues are at Pier Head, near the intersection of Brunswick Street and Canada Boulevard.

Among the many attractions in Liverpool is the International Slavery Museum within the Merseyside Maritime Museum on Albert Dock and also Tate Liverpool.
