Tower Views from St Mary’s Oxford
Visitors to The University Church of St Mary the Virgin can climb the tower and see some of the best views in Oxford.
Another view available to visitors who climb the tower is of the Radcliffe Camera (see below), England’s earliest circular library.
History
The church tower dates from the 13th century, though a church is believed to have stood here from at least the 11th century.
In 1555 St Mary’s was the location of the heresy trial of the Oxford Martyrs. Bishops Latimer and Ridley and Archbishop Cranmer were tried, found guilty, and later burned at the stake.
Up until the 17th-century graduation and degree ceremonies took place here. John Wesley also attended services here while a student at Oxford. Later as a fellow of Lincoln College, he preached regular sermons in the church.
The Oxford Movement had its genesis at the church with the sermons of John Keble.
Perhaps the most spectacular view from the tower is the one below of All Souls College.
