The historic Old Hall Hotel in Buxton claims to be one of the oldest hotels in Britain.

History

It was built in 1573 and housed Mary Queen of Scots from 1576-1578 during her period of house arrest under Elizabeth I. Mary was under the supervision of the Earl of Shrewsbury and his wife – Bess of Hardwick of Hardwick Hall fame.

Mary scratched the following words on a window in the building before she left: “Buxton, whose warm waters have made thy name famous, perchance I shall visit thee no more – Farewell.” As she probably knew all to well, Mary was to be sadly executed at Fotheringhay in 1587.

During the time of Mary’s stay in Buxton, she was visited by a number of prominent people of the age including the Earl of Leicester and Lord Burghley, who were both accommodated at the hall.

The Duke of Devonshire rebuilt the structure in 1670 but retained much of the original building.

Buxton is on the A6 south of Stockport. There are trains to Buxton from Piccadilly Station in Manchester and Stockport, Hazel Grove, and Woodsmoor stations in Stockport. The 199 bus connects Buxton to Manchester Airport. Sheffield is also just a 50-minute drive northwest on the A57. From Derby, the town is about an hour by car on the A515.

Close to the hotel is The Crescent, now completely refurbished, and also St Ann’s Well, the source of Buxton’s famed mineral water. The Pump Room is another historic building, also now completely restored. It serves as the Buxton Visitor Centre where visitors can purchase tickets to visit The Crescent. Also, a short walk away is Pavilion Gardens with pleasant grounds, a cafe, and a miniature railway for the kids. Buxton Opera House & Pavilion Arts Centre offer a wide range of entertainment including cinema, comedy, dance, drama, music, and opera.
