Underbank in Stockport, along with Stockport Market is the historic core of this northern town seven miles south of Manchester.

History

A short walk from Stockport’s rather mundane 1960’s shopping precinct, Underbank retains vestiges of its Victorian past and has a number of popular, traditional pubs and shops.

The cast iron St Petersgate Bridge spans the street and was originally built in 1868.

Pubs

Good pubs on Little Underbank include the charming Queen’s Head and Winter’s, both establishments with a history. The very narrow Queen’s Head dates from the building of the St Petersgate Bridge in 1868 but has a wine cellar of more than 300 years old. Winter’s was originally a jeweller’s until turned into a pub.

Shops

Shopping and eating outlets are the usual eclectic mix of British high street stores: a branch of Freedman’s menswear hire, Stage Door for ballet and dance, a wedding dress store, a head shop, a bookies, a barber’s and a decent fish & chip shop. New independent stores and workshops are also fast appearing in Stockport’s Soho.

Murals

Four new murals have appeared in Underbank. They are Moth mural by Paintsmiths, Shop Small, Love Local by Emily Flanagan, Jimi Hendrix mural by Otto Schade and Mural Life by Russ Meehan aka Qubek. The project was funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and aims to increase visitors to the historic area of the town.
