Previously part of the county of Cheshire, Altrincham dates as a market town from the late 13th century and the town’s market continues to this day.

Altrincham makes for a pleasant day out and there is quite a bit to see and do.

History

The town has a long history, dating back to medieval times when it was a small agricultural settlement. In the 19th century, the town experienced significant growth and development with the arrival of the railway. The improved transportation links facilitated the town’s expansion. During this time, Altrincham became known as a prosperous market town and a desirable residential area.

Places to Eat

The Old Market Place has been restored along with the old whipping post and stocks. This area of town has a number of excellent cafes and eateries along Stamford New Road and Regent Road. These include Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, as well as Italian options.

Pubs & Attractions

Recommended pubs in the town include The Orange Tree and the Old Market Tavern, which are virtually next door. In addition, try the Belgian bar on Greenwood Street, and also the Victoria on Stamford Street.

Altrincham Ice Dome is popular all year round as a skating link and plays host to the local Ice Hockey team. Moss Lane is the home ground of Altrincham FC – “The Robins” – currently in the sixth tier of English football.

Stamford Park is a 16-acre green space with football and cricket facilities. Royd House, built by a local architect as his residence in the early 20th century is a Grade I listed building.

The Garrick Playhouse (Box Office 0161 928 1677) is a well-known local theater. It hosts a variety of performances, including plays, musicals, and comedy shows.

Dunham Massey

Picturesque countryside surrounds the town, including Dunham Massey. Dunham Massey is a National Trust property known for its historic house, gardens, and deer park. The Georgian house opens to visitors from March to October.

The nearby Bridgewater Canal offers opportunities for walking and boating.

Moss Lane

The town’s football team is Altrincham FC. They play their home games at Moss Lane. The ground is now the J. Davidson Stadium (since 2013) for sponsorship reasons. It is just a 15 minute walk from the station. The team has something of a reputation for FA Cup giant-killing.

Access – Getting There

Altrincham enjoys good communications with Manchester via the Metrolink from Altrincham Interchange Station and Navigation Road, which also have Metrolink trams to Bury and Sale.

Altrincham and Navigation Road stations have trains to Chester Station in Chester via Northwich, and to Manchester Piccadilly via Stockport Station in nearby Stockport.

The combination of good transport links with Manchester plus the pleasant aspects of the town means that Alttricham has become something of a property hotspot in recent years.

Property prices in the area are on the rise and the town is very much a desired place to live in the northwest.
