Stockport Station is the main railway station serving the town of Stockport, south of Manchester.

The station is located on the A6 (Wellington Road) and first opened in 1843 after completion of the large brick viaduct just to the north over the River Mersey.

Train Services

Local and mainline services from Stockport Station include trains to Manchester Piccadilly Station with some trains continuing onward to Manchester Oxford Road, Barrow-in-Furness, Blackpool, Liverpool, Preston, Southport, and Wigan.

Other routes from Stockport include local services south to Davenport, Woodsmoor, Hazel Grove and Buxton.

There are First Transpennine Express trains to Sheffield, Cleethorpes, Nottingham and Norwich with an hourly service to Manchester Airport via Piccadilly.

Intercity Trains to Euston

There are intercity train services to London Euston via Cheadle Hulme, Macclesfield and Stoke-on-Trent to Birmingham New Street and Euston. Another route to London Euston is via Wilmslow and Crewe. One train per hour runs to Birmingham New Street and onto Bristol Temple Meads Station.

There are trains running west from Stockport Station to Altrincham, Knutsford, Northwich, and Chester Station in Chester.

The once-hourly service from Stockport via Denton and Guide Bridge to Stalybridge has been reduced to one train a week in both directions – a route now popular with rail buffs due to its scarcity.

Stockport County’s and (once) Sale Shark’s Edgeley Park stadium is a brisk 20-minute walk away from the exit opposite to the booking office. Turn left to access the ground.

From the main booking office entrance walk through or past Grand Central for buses to Manchester and Hazel Grove including the 192 service on Wellington Road South (A6) and the 199 bus to Manchester Airport.

David Bowie

On April 27, 1970, David Bowie slept on the platform of Stockport railway station after missing the last train to London following his solo acoustic performance at the Poca A Poco club on Manchester Road, Heaton Chapel. The concert was organized by sixth-formers from Stockport School Students’ Union (SSU). There are a number of Stockport Music Story commemorative plaques in the town. This is the 10th in the series so far.

Things to see in Stockport in Greater Manchester include Stockport Town Hall, Stockport Air Raid Shelters, St Mary’s Church and the Stockport Dungeon & Court Leet in the market area, Bramall Hall, Woodbank Park, Vernon Park, Stockport Market, Fred Perry’s birthplace, the Garrick Theatre, the Viaduct, Redrock (winner of the 2018 Carbuncle Prize) in the Merseyway Shopping Centre and Stockport Hat Museum.

The Garrick Theatre, Stockport Town Hall, Stockport Art Gallery, the Viaduct, and Stockport Hat Museum are all within easy walking distance of the station.
