Design
The embassy officially opened and raised the Stars and Stripes in January 2018.
The striking design of the new embassy is by the US firm of KieranTimberlake. By US law embassies have to be designed by US companies with government security clearances. The spacious grounds contain a pond and a garden stocked with plants both found on the prairies of North America and the original wetlands of the River Thames.
The US ambassador’s residence in London is Winfield House on the western edge of Regent’s Park. The mansion’s 12 acre (4.9 ha) grounds are the second-largest privately owned garden in London after the garden at Buckingham Palace. The house was commissioned by the much-married American heiress Barbara Hutton (1912-1979), who led a rather sad existence during her lifetime. US Presidents stay here on their state visits to the UK.
