Miller’s Crossing Bridge Exeter

Miller’s Crossing Bridge across the River Exe in Exeter, Devon, is a new pedestrian and cyclist bridge with a striking design.

The modern Miller’s Crossing Bridge just upstream from Blackaller Weir on the River Exe

Crossing from Bonhay Road just upstream from Blackaller Weir, the bridge was built in 2002 and is 54 meters long. It is a cable-stayed type of bridge. A simpler bridge then crosses over the flood channel to Flowerpot Playing Fields.

The most interesting feature of its design is the anchor to which the cables are attached. This is in the shape of two large, circular millstones, a reference to the many mills that formerly operated along this stretch of the river.

On Bonhay Road close to the bridge is the popular pub and restaurant Mill on the Exe. This site was formerly a paper mill and corn mill. The name of the bridge was chosen by public competition.

Access – Getting There

Head south from the city centre on Bonhay Road (A377). It is about 15 minutes on foot from Exeter St David’s Station. The 6 or 6A bus runs past the bridge and pub from the station stopping at Exeter St Thomas Station from where it is a 7-minute walk back.

From Exeter Cathedral walk west for about 12 minutes along Exe Street.
