Royal College of Art Battersea Campus

The Royal College of Art is a prestigious postgraduate institution of art and design in London.

Famous alumni of the RCA include people who have been successful in various fields. They include industrial designer James Dyson, sculptors Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore, and artists Sir Peter Blake, Tracey Emin, David Hockney, R. B. Kitaj, and Bridget Riley.

From the world of fashion both Ossie Clark and Zandra Rhodes are also graduates as are film directors Tony and Ridley Scott, and musician Ian Dury. The designer of the new Routemaster bus, Thomas Heatherwick, also studied at the RCA.

RCA Campuses

The RCA has three campuses in Battersea, South Kensington and White City. The Battersea campus holds the sculpture department and has seen substantial development and investment over recent years. The Sackler Building opened in 2009 and in 2021 a new Arts & Humanities building, designed by Herzog & de Meuron is also scheduled to open.

The Dyson Building, named after the former graduate James Dyson, holds the print-making and photography department. In addition, there is also space on the premises for designers to launch start-ups. Dyson’s educational charity donated £5m to the project.

The Woo Building honors Sir Po-Shing and Lady Helen Woo, both long time supporters of the college. The Sackler, Woo and Dyson buildings are all the work of architectural firm Haworth Tompkins.

Altogether at the Battersea campus are Ceramics & Glass, Contemporary Art Practice, Jewellery & Metal, Painting, Photography and Print as well as InnovationRCA and the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design.

The Battersea campus is close to the Albion Riverside development, the Albert and Battersea bridges, the Peace Pagoda in Battersea Park and Battersea Power Station.

London buses convenient for the Battersea campus are the 19 from Finsbury Park interchange, the 49 from Chelsea, Kensington and White City, the 170 from Roehampton, Clapham Junction and Victoria as well as the 319 from Streatham, Tooting and Sloane Square. The 345 also connects Battersea with the Natural History Museum in Kensington.

Battersea campus is also a 25 minute walk south from South Kensington tube station on the Circle and District lines.
