4 Sydney Place, a Grade II listed house, was the residence to which Jane Austen and her parents first moved when they left the rectory at Steventon to move to Bath in 1801.

The Austens rented the house which was and is opposite Sydney Gardens. The house was then at the very edge of town. The family rented the property for 3 years until their lease expired. They then moved to 27, Green Park Buildings. The family also lived in both Trim Street and Gay Street in Bath until moving to Chawton in Hampshire.

Recently, the first floor of this 18th-century Georgian building has been refurbished as a luxury apartment.

It is available on a self-catering basis from as low as £99 per night (at the special reduced rate). The house now overlooks the entrance to The Holburne Museum of Art.

4 Sydney Place is located just off Great Pulteney Street. Visitors to Bath who are interested in Jane Austen’s connection to the city may also want to visit the Jane Austen Centre or her father, George Austen’s grave.

In Winchester, visitors can see the house (from the outside) that the author spent the last six weeks of her life.
