Crowther Street, L S Lowry, Stockport

L. S. Lowry painted a number of scenes in Stockport including famously Stockport Viaduct. His painting of Crowther Street near Stockport Market entitled A Street in Stockport – Crowther Street dates from 1930.

Though somewhat changed since Lowry’s day and the 1930’s the cobbled street is still recognizable. However, there are far fewer folk on the street like there once was. The properties have been redeveloped and now some of them provide affordable housing for older people.

Some of the town’s more attractive buildings include Stockport Town Hall, the medieval Underbank Hall, now a NatWest Bank, and the recently redeveloped Produce Hall in Stockport Market.

Further places of interest to visit in the Stockport area of Greater Manchester include Robinson’s Brewery Visitor’s Centre, Stockport Air Raid Shelters, Stockport Precinct (Merseyway Shopping Centre) and St Mary’s Church.

Other attractions in and around the town include Bramall Hall, Vernon Park, Fred Perry’s birthplace, Woodbank Park, the Viaduct, the Hat Works, and Stockport Art Gallery. The Three Tunnes and The Flying Coach (formerly The Cock) are a couple of the town’s many fine pubs.

Access – Getting There

Crowther Street is off Lower Hillgate, south of Richer Sounds on Wellington Street. If coming by 192 bus on the north-south A6 get off at the stop for Stockport Station and walk east on Wellington Street. The 314 bus also stops on Wellington Street outside the old Lads Club (The Mission), a fine brick building. It is now home to WEMS, a company producing integrated wireless controls for commercial buildings.
