2023 saw the creation of La Boca to La Stocka by a group of five artists from Buenos Aires in Argentina. The work is on Lower Hopes Carr near the center of Stockport. Local artists and 200 residents worked with the team from Argentina to create it. Indeed, it is the largest hand painted mural in northern England.

On nearby Canal Street local street art collective GRIT Studios who were instrumental in the La Boca to La Stocka mural have their offices. This rather, grimy, industrial part of town has also been transformed recently with a series of eye-popping murals by GRIT and other artists.

A recent addition to the murals on Underbank is the Joy Division mural on the Syndikat creative space building. It was created by artist Otto Schade who was also responsible for the nearby Jimi Hendrix mural. It features the artwork from the band’s first album Unknown Pleasures, which was recorded at nearby Strawberry Studios in 1979. The work also depicts a Vox Phantom VI guitar. Joy Division’s lead singer Ian Curtis, who tragically committed suicide in 1980, played the instrument in the music video for the band’s biggest hit Love Will Tear Us Apart.
