What to See

Visitors can enjoy various Roman pillars, capitals, and columns, a reconstructed hypocaust (underfloor heating system) from the legionary baths, and a modern mosaic.

Deva Victrix, (Deva), was built by the Legio II Adiutrix in the 70s AD as the Roman army moved north against the Brigantes. Deva was completely rebuilt over the following decades by the Legio XX Valeria Victrix.

Chester’s Roman Amphitheatre is the largest-known military amphitheatre in the UK and the city has substantial reminders of its Roman past.

Access – Getting There

The Roman Gardens stand on the site of an old clay tobacco pipe factory. They are a 15-minute walk towards the River Dee from Chester Station.

Chester Station is presently served by Arriva, Virgin, Merseyrail, and Northern Rail connections.

Arriva has trains to Llandudno, Holyhead (via Bangor), Wrexham General, Shrewsbury (and on to Cardiff), Birmingham, Manchester Piccadilly, and Crewe.

There are Intercity trains to London Euston via Crewe and Milton Keynes Central plus more infrequent connections to Holyhead, Bangor, and Wrexham General.

Merseyrail has trains to Liverpool and Birkenhead.

Northern Rail has trains to Manchester Piccadilly and Stockport Station via Northwich.

Manchester Airport is the closest major airport to Chester.

By car coming from the north take the M56 and M53 North Wales Expressway. Coming from the Midlands and south take the M6 as far as Junction 18 then west on the A54.

Chester’s other attractions include the Roman Amphitheater, Eastgate Clock, the Cross, Grosvenor Park, St John’s Church, the Meadows, Chester Cathedral, and the Rows. The riverside Boathouse pub is also nearby.
